4 Tips to Get Into Nursing School

e19If you hope to sign up to a nursing program, you want to have at least preexisting knowledge of some of the basics, such as CPR. This emergency procedure is often listed as part of the admission criteria, and shows that you have a willingness to learn and commit to this profession. Here are four things to consider in the process of getting into nursing school:

Volunteer work or community service

By applying for volunteer work or community service it is possible to give a great first impression when it comes to enrolling in a teaching school and when you are reviewed by the admission committee. Any form of community service involvement is viewed in a very positive manner, especially when it relates to BSN level. It is possible to connect with a local hospital via one of their volunteer coordinators. Also, it benefits to stick with a single position and not change roles on a regular basis. The reason for this is the ability to get a reference that comes from someone you have worked with for a while.

Visit the nursing school

Before you make a commitment to a particular nursing school it can benefit to visit those you plan to apply to. If possible, talk to other students, sit in on classes and talk to professors. Try to get tips and guidance on how to get accepted into the preferred program. Also, the nursing school advisors can give a general idea of what the admissions committee is looking for and the overall competitiveness of the program.

Well organized essay

Use the entry essay to clearly show you have the academic know-how to match the needs of the nursing course. Try to write the unique essay that details the path taken and your motivation for applying to this specific profession. Also, include details about why the specific school has been selected and why it is a great fit for your personal circumstances. Get others to read the essay and get suggestions to help make improvements.

Letter of recommendation

A very positive letter of recommendation that highlights your commitment and achievements is certain to impress the admissions committee. Community and volunteering services are great places to connect with and can write the type of recommendation letter that can hold a lot of weight and hopefully sway the admissions committee into giving you a positive outcome. Also, similar to the entry essay, you should check and proof read these letters before submitting.

Nursing, The Noble As Well As Lucrative Career

e18A nurse takes care of their patient just like a mother takes care of her child. Shielding them from anything harmful and taking care of every activity performed by the patient and regarding the patient, so that they become healthy. They also administer the medicines regularly to their patients as well as help the doctor treat the patient successfully. He/she is the one who comes running in case of any emergency in a hospital even before the doctor does and attends the patient wholeheartedly till they recover.

The profession of nurse is a very noble one. The patients trust them with their lives and are dependent on them while they are striving to get better. Each and everything from what to eat, to what to wear, which medicine is to be administered and at what time should a patient be sponged and to when a test sample is to be taken, everything falls under the dominion of the concerned nurse. Anything and everything a doctor suggests, is implemented by the nurse only.

He/she is the point of contact for the patient and his/her family, any problem that they face is communicated to the nurse, who takes the required course of action as much as possible and falls under their area of action, if the problem still persists, then the doctor is made aware of the situation.

Nurses don’t keep taking care of the patients without any clue of what is happening with the patient and why they are being administered with the specified medicine. They attain an education and specialization in different areas such as, adult nursing, child nursing, mental health nursing, learning disabilities and so many others. They work side by side with the doctors for the attainment of the perfect health of the patient they are working on.

Different courses that can be taken up under the nursing branch are –

ADN – (Advanced Diploma in Nursing) Junior Specialist Program; which is a 2 year program,

BSN – (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Bachelor Degree Program; which is a 4 year program, and

MSN – (Masters of Science in Nursing) Master Degree Program; which is a 2 year program.

There are uncountable universities for attaining good quality education in the field of nursing, including different specialties that can be taken up by the interested students. Any student should take care of the reputation of the university they are choosing to pursue their education from. Apart from that, the fee to be paid for the program should be kept in mind, as well as the quality of education imparted there and the culture that is prevalent there and if, it promotes studying or not. Choose the best nursing schools which offer the best program, whether diploma or degree that suits your needs.

7 Common Problems Students Face During University Life

e17Starting university is like starting a new life. When students leave home for university, they embark on a new journey, one that of self-reliance and self-discovery, which largely shapes up their outlook on life in the longer run.

Most students are not prepared for the challenges of university and end up being overwhelmed, which results in them taking extra time to adjust to their new life. That is fine, as long as you eventually get comfortable with university life, but a far better course of action would be to prepare yourself, mentally and emotionally, for any problem you may face at college and university level.

Here are a few issues you should be ready to deal with as a university student.

1. Adjustment to New Life

Whether you are a student experiencing the campus environment for the first time or going back to the campus life after spending the vacation at home, there will be a period of adjustment, more so in the first scenario.

The first year of university is always extra hard when it comes to adjustment to university life so you should be expecting to at least get a culture shock because of how different things would be compared to home or school. Additionally, it is important to not get in a frenzy over getting everything right. Give yourself some time, and expect to get a little bamboozled, but always stay confident that eventually you will come to love the university life.

2. Homesickness

Since it is the first time being away from home for most students, homesickness can strike very hard. However, thanks to the modern means of communication, most students feeling homesick can stay connected with their parents, family members and friends over the internet.

3. Pressure of Studies

Most students are paying their education expenses themselves so the pressure on them to get good grades is immense. Even if it is not them paying, there are still massive social and educational repercussions of not succeeding in the studies. Students should expect the studies to be much harder than before, and at the same time, should focus more on learning rather than getting a good GPA.

4. Cost of Education

Ever since the most recent increase in the cost of higher education in the UK, the number of students seeking professional counseling has significantly increased. Mental health issues are surfacing more than ever in students according to a survey by the National Students Union (NUS).

You should realize that the only way you can avoid mental anxiety and make the expenses worth is when you enjoy your time in the university, focus on your studies and keep a nice balance between the two.

5. Finding New Friends

It is difficult to make friends at a new place, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will have to fit in with people who have different interests in order to make new friends at university. You can be yourself and find friends at the same time, you just have to be patient and involve yourself in activities that you like.

6. Housing Problems

You may get a place in the hostel or dorm, but it is really difficult to find student accommodation that is right for you. You have to consider factors such as distance, rent rates, facilities, roommates etc. Students face housing problems all the time so if you can, have a place ready before you leave home. Student accommodation is a big issue in UK and you would do well to have a solution prepared.

7. Time Management

From trying to study to living alone and doing the required chores, to maintaining a social life, to possibly working some sort of a job to help with expenses, students don’t have the “time” to manage and think about their time. They sleep in irregular patterns and do everything at the last minute.

Make Text Messaging a Part of Your College Recruitment Strategy

e15Summer after graduation can be a particularly stressful and confusing time for high school graduates. Going to college seems like the next logical step but there are a lot of decisions to be made, including selecting which college to attend.

Fortunately, there are text messaging services students can opt-in that makes the entire process less overwhelming.

It’s important for universities to deliver value first as unsolicited text might seem invasive to some students and discourage them to apply. Read-worthy content helps to create awareness and increase engagement, which will ultimately be useful when the time comes for the students to choose.

Students’ opting-in to text messages is a clear indication of their interest in a certain university. However, it’s possible that they have also signed up with other programs elsewhere. Still, this creates an opportunity for colleges to develop better strategies to reach the student population and encourage incoming college students to choose them.

By using SMS platforms, colleges can send messages that thank students for their interest upon subscription. Furthermore, these messages can be programmed to send replies that address subscribers by their first name, making it more personal.

Students can also inquire about the necessary requirements for enrollment. This way, universities can prevent students who fail to matriculate just because they have difficulty navigating the enrollment process.

Text messaging can also help prevent summer melt. This refers to a phenomenon wherein students who have already committed to one university either decided to attend another or failed to transition to college altogether.

In order to recruit students successfully, your messages should be relevant and compelling. They may be considering your institution but you have to provide valuable information to forge a connection with prospective students.

Perhaps, the popularity of SMS is never more apparent than in universities where students send and receive dozens of messages everyday. As such, education institutions need to plan how to integrate SMS into their overall recruitment strategy.

If you’re running a recruitment campaign for a college or university, you might consider using text messaging platforms to reach prospective students. Incoming college students use texting as a daily form of communication and universities should take advantage of this fact.

Enhance Your Law Career Through Specialization

e13In the changing world of the legal profession, studying at a good law school and passing a bar exam alone is not considered sufficient. Majority of the times, the practicing lawyers are required to have specialty areas when representing clients in civil and criminal court. Legal specialization has a direct, positive impact on advocates’ competence. The specialist lawyers demonstrate high level of proficiency in their practice area. This way they stay on the leading edge of their profession, and improve their quality of legal service to the public.

The law graduates’ area of practice and career path is often-a-times determined by the first job they take. Either it will be that they are satisfied with the legal practice area they are working in, or they dislike it. While they are in a law college, most of them are focused on performing well and showcasing their accomplishments to score the best placements through campus. During that time, the only concern the students have is to find the best fit in the industry.

As a formal legal education is mandatory before the candidates get entry into practice, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has prescribed Compulsory subjects for the law students that will help build the foundation of legal knowledge enabling them to develop and enhance the skills needed to become successful lawyers and to make a positive contribution to the society.

While undergoing a law study program, the students are introduced to many Elective subjects offered in the curriculum so that they become acquainted with different areas of law. The electives vary according to the actual course in which the student has enrolled (Bachelor of Laws or an Integrated Bachelor Degree in Law). The specialty area(s) that particularly interest them will help in exploring new and significant developments in the law and the legal system. Some of the most popular specializations are:

Business Law or the Commercial Law deals with the rights and conduct of businesses & individuals engaged in commerce, merchandising, trade, and sales. It can be sub-divided into:

• Small-business Law often focuses on providing legal counsel to the start-up business, such as tax classifications, hiring employees, and the proper zoning and licensing requirements

• Corporate Law or Corporation Law deals with advising corporations on their legal rights, obligations, privileges; studying statutes, constitutions and ordinances

Civil Law deals with concerns of private rights of individuals, such as handling damage suits and breach of contract suits, drawing deeds, wills and mortgages.

Criminal Law where one deals with offences against society or state; involves preparing a case for defense, correlating findings, conducting trials, examining and cross-examining in court and so on.

Constitutional Law is the written text of the fundamental principles and provisions of Indian Constitution by which the state and central government exercise the authority. This body of law draws heavily from rulings made in the Supreme Court.

Environmental Law deals with enactment of treaties, regulations, and common and customary laws towards protection of the natural environment from the effects of human activity.

Intellectual Property (IP) Law deals with the acquisition and imposition of patents, trademarks and copyrights to a registered idea, product, name, word, symbol, or even Internet domain names. IP law protects the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through following three subdivisions:

• Patent Law focuses on securing patents of inventions and technology; prosecuting or defending patent infringement

• Trademark Law is designed to defend a company’s or an individual’s investment in any distinguishing name, symbol or device

• Copyright Law deals with the protection of literary, artistic and musical works

International Law specializes on treaties, customs and traditions observed by nations in their relations with one another.

Labour Law deals with issues between management and workers in the firms, their associations, their rights and duties, and working conditions.

Real Estate Law covers conveyance of property, verification of records and deeds to establish titles of property; acting as trustee for property; drawing up legal documents for deeds and mortgages.

Tax Law deals with income tax, estate tax, real tax, franchises, tax treaty and regulatory rules that constitute the law applicable to taxation.

Difference Between MBA and PGDM

What do MBA and PGDM stand for? MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a degree, while PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma program. As per the norms of the UGC, Colleges/Institutes affiliated to a university can offer MBA degrees. The autonomous/private Business Schools which are not affiliated to any university can offer the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programs.

Hence, even apex institutions like IIM, XLRI, and SPJIMR offer PGDM and not the MBA degree since these institutions are autonomous bodies and are not affiliated to any university. As such, there is no difference in what is being taught in PGDM and MBA.

However, the autonomous business schools frequently change the syllabus to meet the industry standards. A syllabus change in an MBA program is rare since the college offering the program has no authority to change syllabus. Before you make a decision you should also note that MBA programs are a lot cheaper than PGDM programmes.

Which is better: MBA or PGDM?

In an MBA degree, you will be provided with theoretical knowledge of management concepts and practices. Theoretical knowledge may be useful if you want to get into research. Also, the MBA syllabus is not amended very regularly as the college offering MBA has no authority to change the syllabus. This can be a major deterrent in the management arena because the real business environment is very dynamic and full of sudden unexpected changes. Hence, the MBA degree is more academic and theoretical in nature.

The PGDM programme, if done from an above average business school, will drill you with efficient training and will give you insights into real life business situations. It is more practical in nature. Since autonomous business schools have freedom to change syllabus, the PGDM programme will be structured in a manner most suitable to the real business environment.

However, the fact is that the industry treats MBA and PGDM graduates in an equal manner. Even in the global job industry, same treatment is given to MBA and PGDM graduates. In fact, the industry is concerned more with the skill set of the students rather than the degree. Hence doing either MBA or PGDM will have the same impact on your career. Your starting salary will depend more on the reputation and brand name of your college/business school and not on the degree name. Hence you must carefully choose your college/business school if you want to pursue an MBA or PGDM.

Research and Higher Education after MBA/PGDM:

You must note that not all Universities/Institutions accept PGDM as a Master’s equivalent for admission into their Ph.D programs. You will be eligible for Ph.D, if you complete MBA or you complete PGDM from AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approved institutions.

Hence, if you wish to pursue Ph.D after MBA, you must make sure that you have either an MBA degree or a PGDM from AICTE approved institutions. If you wish to pursue your Ph.D abroad, it is always better to complete an MBA degree from any reputed college or university.

What I Learned In College About College

e10I was 17 when I was expected to choose a college based on what majors they offered that were in-line with what I wanted to do. I cringe thinking back on that! I could barely decide how to identify myself in the high school social arena, much less decide what I wanted to do with the next 50 years of my life.

Many adults don’t care to have meaningful conversations with 17-year-olds but expect them to make lifelong decisions about their future.

When I was a kid I loved reading about Jane Goodall and Penny Patterson’s work with her gorilla, Koko. I read books about animals constantly. I even took field notes during one summer about the life cycle of the butterflies in my backyard. I used to think that if I was only brave enough I would become a nature photographer and travel to remote parts of the world to record rare footage of beautiful creatures.

Somehow none of that was considered when I was looking for majors that were “in-line” with my interests. It was important to my parents that I became a professional, meaning doctor or lawyer. So I obediently let go of my “childish” passions and did what was expected.

At Queens, where I earned my first undergraduate degree, I took an ethics course with a renowned professor who would regularly stop the class to interject his thoughts on the importance of a year off between high school and college.

He talked about how it’s important for people to give themselves a chance to see who they are going to be in life before heading off to school. He believed that higher education should help you shape yourself into the best possible you.

As much as I agreed with him, it was already too late! During my time at Queens and for some time afterward, I would think back on his class and wonder if I had missed my chance.

I took a year off after Queens to study for the LSAT and sure enough, that’s when I had the chance to see who I was going to be in life. The hardest part was and still is acting on it. The last four and a half years has seen its fair share of setbacks and more than its fair share of debt.

Right now, I’m taking more time off of school while I give my daughter the care and attention she deserves. In order to contribute more than just childcare to my family, I work as many online gigs as I can come up with.

I’ve started outlining my shelter’s mission statement and coming up with ideas for its operations. I’ve downloaded (but not printed because ink is expensive) all the necessary forms to start my nonprofit. And now, whenever I’m not entertaining or feeding my toddler, I am writing new posts and ideas for this blog. Every day, I’m hustling!

The price of a college education is spiraling out of control, making it one of the most important investments many of us will ever make. It’s important that parents don’t push their agendas on their teens like my parents did and that we build teens up so they don’t let others make them feel silly for their aspirations.

Does Your College President Interact With Students

e8Have you ever had something important you wanted to bring to the attention of the President of your college?

Students, Parents and Alumni may try to contact their College President via Telephone, E-Mail or by Letter. Some students may even visit the President’s office. Unfortunately, the typical reply most people receive is silence.

Phone calls are usually not returned and there will be no reply to your e-mail message or letter. Too many College Presidents have no time for or interest in the things that students, parents or alumni think or recommend. However, there is one exception–major donors. If someone donates $10,000 or more, they may get a form letter or a message from a staff member. The fact that students are struggling to pay $80,000 to $250,000 for tuition and expenses may not be recognized as a good enough reason to listen to their concerns and suggestions.

When you try to contact your College President, you may find that they have surrounded themselves with layers of protection and security. Nothing much gets through. Only the official policy gets out.

Few College Presidents pick up their own office phones or reply to an e-mail message or letter. If by some miracle you get through to an assistant, you will quickly be shuttled off to “the person who handles that area.” With that, the assistant who works for that person will promise to leave a message for him/her. Of course, very often, you will never hear back.

In rare instances, there will be a college president who is different. Those College Presidents and some college leaders find ways to gather firsthand information. To hear from their students, they:

1. Designate certain days to field questions from students, parents and alumni

2. Make presentations to share information with students and then invite questions

3. Regularly attend athletic events and interact with students

4. Find time to visit the cafeteria, student center, dorms and library

5. Hold meetings to hear student likes, dislikes, concerns and suggestions

6. Regularly meet with student officers and representatives

7. Walk around campus to chat with students

8. Occasionally sit in on classes

Important Questions for Students, Parents and Alumni

1. How many hours each month does your College President devote to student contact? Est. 0 1 2 3 4 5 or more

2. Does your College President utilize the College Web Site, Campus Newspaper, Student Radio and TV Station and in person Presentations the keep the student body informed of current and future goals, activities and changes that will affect students? Yes No

3. Do you know any student who has spoken to your College President? Yes No

8. Do you believe that your College President and College Leaders are genuinely concerned about the students on your campus? Yes No

9. Does your College President have a reputation for being “Student Friendly?” Yes No
